PhD studentship

I am advertising a PhD position, to start in September 2023. The project will focus on moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, with a particular focus on logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory. Here is the official advertisement, which also contains more information about the project. Here is the FindAPhD page.

The position is supported by a QMUL Science and Engineering PhD Studentship. This provides funding for 3.5 years, including home tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £19,668 (subject to small annual increments). For eligibility criteria, please see the bottom of this page.

Applying. If you are interested in applying and/or would like more information, please get in touch with me informally via email. For the formal application, please follow the instructions on this page. The deadline for applications is 31st January 2023.

Eligibility. The studentship only covers home fees. The precise definition of "home fee" is somewhat complex, with eligibility being ultimately determined by the QMUL Admissions Team (see this page). As a general rule, if you are a UK national (or EU/EEA/Swiss national with pre-settled or settled status in the UK) and have been resident in the UK for the past three years, you should qualify for home fees. If you are not eligible for home fees you are still very welcome to apply, but unfortunately you would need to be able to fund the difference in fees by other means. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have questions about this.

Here are some tips for navigating the application form:

  • Click the link under "PhD Full-time Mathematical Sciences: Semester 1 (September start)".

  • Under "Other Information" you should select "I am a QMUL Research Studentship applicant" and that you are not applying for specific named funding.

  • Under "Research Proposal" you should name me as the "Proposed supervisor" and should enter the "Proposed project title / Studentship title" as "Topology of stable mapping spaces / QMUL Science & Engineering PhD Studentship".

  • You do not need to upload a research proposal, but you should include a personal statement under the "Personal Statement" tab.
